3 Days in the Netherlands: A Perfect Short Getaway

The Netherlands might be small in size, but it’s overflowing with charm, history, and picturesque scenery. From iconic canals to windmills, tulip fields to world-class museums, three days is enough to give you a rich taste of Dutch life – especially if you base yourself in Amsterdam with quick trips to nearby gems.

Day 1: Amsterdam – Canals, Culture, and Cuisine

Morning: Canals & Old Town

Start with a stroll along Amsterdam’s UNESCO-listed canal belt. The Jordaan neighborhood is particularly charming, with narrow streets, boutique shops, and cozy cafés. Stop at Café Winkel 43 for a slice of the city’s most famous apple pie.

Take a canal cruise (1 hour) to see the city from its most photogenic angle. Many boats have glass roofs for year-round comfort.

Midday: Art & History

Spend a few hours in the Rijksmuseum, home to masterpieces by Rembrandt and Vermeer, or visit the Van Gogh Museum for a deep dive into the artist’s life. If you prefer history, book a timed entry to the Anne Frank House (tickets sell out weeks in advance).

Afternoon: Vondelpark & Food Halls

Stroll through Vondelpark, Amsterdam’s lush green escape. Then head to Foodhallen, an indoor street-food-style market, for everything from Indonesian satay to Dutch bitterballen.

Evening: Amsterdam by Night

Have dinner at The Pancake Bakery or enjoy modern Dutch cuisine at Restaurant Greetje. End your evening in the De Pijp neighborhood for lively bars and late-night bites.

Where to Stay in Amsterdam:

  • Luxury: De L’Europe Amsterdam (canal-front elegance)
  • Mid-Range: The Hoxton (stylish boutique hotel)
  • Budget: ClinkNOORD Hostel (ferry ride from the city center)

Day 2: Windmills & Dutch Countryside

Morning: Zaanse Schans

Take a short train ride (20 minutes) from Amsterdam to Zaanse Schans, a postcard-perfect village with historic windmills, wooden houses, and craft shops. You can watch traditional clog-making, taste Dutch cheeses, and even tour working windmills.

Midday: Edam or Volendam

Continue to Edam, famous for its cheese markets (summer only), or Volendam, a fishing village with colorful houses and seafood stalls serving fresh herring.

Afternoon: Haarlem

On your way back, stop in Haarlem, a charming city with cobblestone streets, boutique shopping, and the impressive Grote Kerk. The Frans Hals Museum is a must for art lovers.

Evening: Return to Amsterdam

Have dinner at Moeders (“Mothers”), a quirky restaurant serving traditional Dutch comfort food surrounded by hundreds of framed mom photos on the walls.

Day 3: Utrecht or The Hague & Delft

You can choose between two great day trips:

Option A: Utrecht – Canals with a Twist

Only 25 minutes from Amsterdam, Utrecht is a lively university town with canals that have wharf-level cafés right on the water. Climb the Dom Tower for sweeping city views, explore the Museum Speelklok (musical clocks and instruments), and enjoy a relaxed lunch by the canals.

Option B: The Hague & Delft – Culture and Ceramics

Take a morning train to The Hague (50 minutes) to visit the Mauritshuis Museum, home to Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring. Stroll through the Binnenhof, the Dutch political heart, then hop over to Delft (15 minutes) for its charming square, canals, and famous blue-and-white pottery.

Tips for a Smooth Trip

  • Transportation: The Netherlands has an excellent train system—buy an OV-chipkaart for easy travel.
  • Language: Dutch is the official language, but nearly everyone speaks English.
  • Best Time to Visit: April–May for tulips, or September for mild weather and fewer crowds.
  • Be Respectful and mindful: There have recently been anti-tourism protests in Amsterdam; however, these are mostly grievances against disrespectful and rude drug-related, sex-related, and other red-light district activity tourism.
  • Packing: Bring layers, as weather can change quickly.

In 3 days, you’ll get the essence of the Netherlands—its art, history, windmills, and canals—all at a relaxed pace that leaves you with time to savor stroopwafels and sip coffee by the water. Whether you stick to Amsterdam or venture out into the countryside, the charm of this small but vibrant nation will stay with you long after your trip ends.
